Dexter

Meet our very special boy, Dexter! This sweetie is a big lover. Dexter enjoys playing in the yard, long walks in the park, car rides, ice cream cones, and snuggling on the sofa. Dexter  takes a minute to get to know you, but then he's your best friend. This guy would make a perfect jogging partner or hiking buddy.

Dexter gets along with other dogs with a proper introduction. He is a bit rough and tumble  with his playing,, so he would need a patient doggy friend. Dexter has been raised around cats and leaves them alone. Dexter is going to make some lucky person very happy!

Dexter was born to a mama dog in another rescue group. His foster knew there was something going on when he failed to gain weight and became listless. She discovered Dexter had a cleft palate and couldn't nurse. She knew he needed someone experienced if he was going to live, so she reached out for help. We were able to take the little guy on and provide the specialized care he needed. This included tube feeding every few hours, watching closely for aspiration and being ready with oxygen & antibiotics, and careful observation for infections. Dexter was in rough shape when we got him. He was dehydrated and quite thin. He spent the first few weeks of his life in an incubator with round the clock care. Dex gained weight very slowly. We weaned him as soon as possible to reduce the risks of tube feeding a big, squirmy puppy. Once he started eating kibble, his weight took off! Some cleft palates close up a bit as the puppy grows. Many dogs do not need surgery to live happy, healthy lives. Unfortunately, the size and shape of Dexter's cleft needed surgical repair to prevent ongoing infections and possible aspiration. We found a wonderful specialist and two surgeries later Dexter's cleft is repaired and healed!
